Graduation Celebrations Disrupted as Tree Collapse Leads to Injuries of 12 at Pleasant Hill

A towering tree adjacent to Diablo Valley College's football field toppled over just before 7 p.m. on Friday, minutes before the conclusion of the school's graduation ceremony. Twelve bystanders sustained injuries as a result, according to a spokesperson from the Contra Costa Community College District.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Two people were transported to local hospitals, while a third sought care on their own. The remaining injured individuals were treated on-site and subsequently released. Crews from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, already on standby for the event, reached the victims promptly. None of the injuries were deemed life-threatening.

Potential Causes of the Fall

Investigators are looking into the likely causes, including the tree's age and the recent windy weather. A weather station five miles away recorded gusts of up to 30 mph around the time of the collapse. Diablo Valley College is currently conducting an arborist review of the mature trees on campus, while the Contra Costa County authorities carry out their own investigation.

College Statement

In a written statement, DVC expressed its concern for the well-being of its students, employees, and visitors, stating, "The safety of our community is our top priority." Maintenance crews removed the tree later that night to allow for the reopening of the field for planned summer-session activities.

Further Investigations and Supplementary Measures

County investigators will determine whether factors such as disease, soil conditions, or wind were involved in the tree's collapse. DVC will publish the findings and any recommended safety upgrades when the review is finalized. Anyone with footage of the incident is requested to share it with campus police to aid the investigation.

The college encouraged students and families who required counseling to reach out to DVC's Wellness Services, emphasizing that the distressing incident should not overshadow the accomplishments of the Class of 2025.
