Berlin Calls for Democratic Resilience within Police Force

GP Vice-Leader Advocates for Police 'Democratic Strength': Pushing for Enhanced Democratic Resilience within Law Enforcement Agencies

Jörg Radek, deputy federal chairman of the Police Trade Union (GdP), has urged for the promotion of "democratic resilience" within Germany's police force. In a radio interview, he emphasized the need for training programs that fortify officers against extremist, populist, or fascist rhetoric. According to Radek, these programsshould empower those cops doing outstanding work, making them immune to right-wing slogans.

The latest right-wing extremism event in NRW police demands serious attention, Radek asserts. "We can't brush off this as juvenile delinquency," he says. "We've moved past a point where we must unequivocally condemn such acts, even if they're due to negligence." Officers should feel safe reporting suspicious colleagues, and there must be avenues to address such problematic behavior. Superiors bear the primary responsibility for addressing this issue.

Radek also proposes introducing a mandatory migrant quota in the police as a potential solution. He clarifies, however, that this measure alone won't be enough to make the force resistant to racism and extremism.

Democratic resilience training programs may involve recognizing and addressing extremist behaviors, promoting diversity, and fostering team cohesion. Community engagement and outreach programs, policy development, and initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic foundations can further enhance these efforts. The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights provides training for government and law-enforcement officials on related topics. For more specific information on German police force initiatives, it's recommended to consult German government or police reports.

  1. The call for democratic resilience within Germany's police force extends beyond training programs to include policy and legislation, with a focus on addressing extremism and promoting diversity.
  2. In addition to the proposed migrant quota in the police force, general news and crime-and-justice sections should highlight the importance of fostering a culture of accountability, wherein officers feel safe reporting suspicious colleagues and problematic behavior is effectively addressed.
