Governors across the region issued flood alerts, with military forces engaged in flood combat in Chiang Rai province.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered governors of 52 provinces to remain vigilant for potential flooding, following heavy downpours forecast until Tuesday, according to government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub.
In response to the Meteorological Department's warnings, governors have been instructed to carefully assess flood risks and offer immediate assistance to affected areas. The Prime Minister also urged the public to stay informed about government updates to ensure prompt responses to any emergencies.
Heavy rains resulted in the Sai River overflowing early Saturday, flooding multiple communities in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. As a result, Prime Minister Paetongtarn directed Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to expedite assistance to those affected areas.
Engineering corps troops have been deployed to collaborate with the Chiang Rai provincial administration in constructing a permanent flood embankment along the Sai River, while temporary barriers have been erected around flooded communities and floodwaters are being actively drained. The permanent embankment, currently under construction, is expected to improve the district's flood prevention capabilities by next month.
Authorities in Mae Sai have also prepared evacuation shelters in case of worsening flood conditions.
In related news, the Chiang Rai provincial administration has already installed six water pumps, with plans to deploy more as part of broader flood mitigation efforts.
Repeated flooding has troubled Chiang Rai's communities, particularly in Mae Sai district. During the night of May 24, continued heavy rainfall led the Sai River to breach its banks, flooding areas like Tham Phajom Village, Sai Lom Joy Market, Noi Muang Dang Market, Muang Dang Community, and Mai Lung Khon Community. Throughout the night, residents evacuated their homes, often amid darkness, to save their possessions and find higher ground.
