Texas Governor to Mobilize National Guard for Demonstrations - Governor to Deploy National Guard During Texas Protests

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is planning to deploy the National Guard at certain locations within the state in response to planned protests. This move comes following demonstrations against US President Donald Trump's immigration policies, which have spread across the country, including Los Angeles.

On Tuesday evening (local time), several arrests were made in LA for violating the nighttime curfew imposed on a small area in the city center, according to police reports. The relationship between Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom has become increasingly strained in the political power struggle surrounding the demonstrations.

Sources reveal that soldiers from Texas are on standby, waiting for planned protests in the state. Governor Abbott has remained silent on the details of the deployment. Protests are planned in San Antonio on both Wednesday and Saturday.

Recent days have seen peaceful protests in Texas, including in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio, as reported by the media.

Deploying the National Guard - an individual governor's prerogative

Previously, demonstrations in Los Angeles against Trump's hardline immigration stance and ICE immigration raids had taken place. The US government then mobilized 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 regular military personnel for deployment in Los Angeles, against the wishes of Governor Newsom. The soldiers have begun to arrive, with a maximum deployment of 60 days currently planned.

Trump's decision marks a significant escalation and display of power. This action is highly unusual and controversial. Meanwhile, in Texas, Governor Abbott, unlike the situation in California, has opted to take the initiative himself. The National Guard is currently only being deployed in California and Texas due to protests.

LA Mayor Imposes Curfew

In response to the demonstrations in Los Angeles, the city imposed a nighttime curfew on a small area in the center. The measure is initially in effect for Wednesday night (local time), as Mayor of LA Karen Bass announced. She expects the curfew to be maintained for several nights.

However, some individuals failed to comply: 25 individuals were arrested for potential curfew violations, according to the LA Times, citing a police spokesperson. Police began "mass arrests" shortly after 9 pm on Tuesday (local time), an hour after the curfew began.

The Battle Between Trump and Newsom

Meanwhile, the relationship between Trump and California Governor Newsom has reached new heights. Trump accused Newsom and Bass of colluding with radical demonstrators in LA. "They have paid rioters, agitators, and insurrectionists," Trump alleged without providing any evidence.

In an unexpected address to the citizens, Newsom launched a scathing attack on Trump's policies. He accused the President of undermining the separation of powers in the US, firing overseers who could hold him accountable for corruption and fraud. He also criticized Trump's attempts to dictate what universities can teach, targeting media and freedom of speech, and dividing society. “Democracy is being attacked before our eyes,” Newsom declared.

Newsom criticized Trump for militarizing LA's streets, causing trauma to American communities, and arresting the most vulnerable members of society. "Authoritarian regimes start by targeting those least able to defend themselves," he said.

Enrichment Observations

In both Texas and California, governors have invoked the National Guard to maintain order during protests. However, the contexts are different, with California facing federal intervention and Texas deploying its state forces. The circumstances surrounding Texas's decision to deploy the National Guard are yet to be clarified.

  • The United States, specifically Texas, is set to deploy the National Guard in response to planned protests, echoing similar actions taken in California.
  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking the initiative in contrast to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has faced federal intervention in the deployment of the National Guard.
  • Governor Abbott's plan to deploy the National Guard follows demonstrations against the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, much like the demonstrations in Los Angeles.
  • The relationship between Trump and Newsom has become increasingly strained, with accusations of collusion with radical demonstrators in Los Angeles and criticisms of Trump's policies, including his immigration policies and attempts to dictate what universities can teach.
