Governor Ron DeSantis initiates Florida college renovation, planning to install a statue of Charlie Kirk

In a surprising turn of events, right-wing activist and organiser Charlie Kirk is set to receive a statue on the campus of the New College of Florida. The announcement was made by the college, marking a significant milestone for Kirk, who gained popularity among a segment of America's young, male demographic due to his campus conservative movement through Turning Point USA.

The New College of Florida, a public liberal arts school in Sarasota, Florida, was founded as a private institution in 1964 and became an autonomous college within Florida's state university system in 2001. In recent years, the college has been in the spotlight, with Governor Ron DeSantis's plan to overhaul the school's board of trustees in 2023.

The proposed design of Kirk's statue depicts him seated at a table with two empty chairs, speaking into a microphone and gesturing toward an imagined audience. The statue, which is being privately funded by community leaders, will stand on the New College of Florida campus. However, it is not yet clear whether Kirk will be included in Donald Trump's proposed National Garden of Heroes.

Kirk, known for his staunch far-right positions, has been vocal about his anti-abortion, anti-immigration, and opposition to LGBTQIA+ rights. He has also referenced and propagated the "great replacement" theory, a debunked white nationalist conspiracy theory. It is important to note that these views are controversial and have been criticised by many.

Interestingly, the statue of Kirk is not the first public memorial to him. On September 10, the day he was shot and killed, President Donald Trump ordered flags flown at half-staff. The location for the statue will be announced in the coming months.

James Uthmeier, DeSantis's chief of staff, stated that the plan was to make the school "Florida's classical college, more along the lines of a Hillsdale of the South." This statement suggests a shift towards a more conservative ideology at the New College of Florida. In this context, the decision to commission a statue of Charlie Kirk takes on greater significance.

Governor DeSantis replaced six of the college's 13 trustees with conservative allies, further emphasising the shift in the school's direction. As the details of the statue's location and the timing of its unveiling are revealed, the debate surrounding this decision is likely to continue.
