Governor Kathy Hochul of New York and former President Donald Trump share a unique camaraderie.

In an unexpected turn of events, Governor Kathy Hochul and former President Donald Trump have found themselves in regular communication, a relationship that has proven beneficial for both parties in New York politics.

Despite Trump's criticism of progressive politics, Hochul has endorsed state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, a move that Trump found surprising. However, their personal and professional rapport seems to have withstood this political difference.

Hochul's pragmatic approach, coupled with her ability to maintain a firm yet respectful stance, has been instrumental in her dealings with Trump. Morgan Hook, a Democratic strategist, noted that this pragmatism allows Hochul to cut deals effectively.

One such deal involved the resumption of the construction of an offshore wind farm, a project that Hochul reinitiated after talks with Trump. Another notable instance was the agreement to let the federal government take over the reconstruction of Manhattan's Penn Station, a decision that has the potential to expedite the long-awaited renovation.

Their relationship has also played a role in halting Trump's plans to send the National Guard to New York. In a show of mutual respect, Trump backed down when Hochul asked him not to intervene in the state's affairs.

Meanwhile, Trump's diplomatic efforts have extended beyond New York's borders. He has been in contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as part of his efforts to mediate in the Ukrainian conflict, and participated in a Gipfeltreffen with European leaders, including the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and others.

In the midst of these political manoeuvres, the state Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing a natural gas pipeline that had previously been canceled, following negotiations with President Trump.

The ease with which Hochul and Trump negotiate is attributed, in part, to their shared communication style. General Tom Reynolds, a former U.S. Rep. from suburban Buffalo, suggested that "generals talk to generals," implying that their direct and straightforward approach contributes to their successful interactions.

Kathryn Wylde, CEO of the business group Partnership for New York City, finds Hochul's dealmaking appealing to Trump. She described Hochul as not challenging Trump's authority and not being a pushover, qualities that have likely contributed to their productive relationship.

As the political landscape of New York continues to evolve, the unique dynamic between Governor Hochul and President Trump remains a fascinating aspect of the state's politics. Whether this partnership will continue to shape the state's future remains to be seen.

In a separate development, immigration agents are swarming Chicago, with President Trump threatening to send the National Guard to the city. These actions, if implemented, could significantly impact the city's community and politics.
