Governor Ivey gives John Young the leadership role as Chairman of the Marshall County Commission
New Chairman of Marshall County Commission Sworn In
John Young, a lifelong resident of Marshall County, Alabama, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Marshall County Commission. Governor Kay Ivey made the announcement in August 2025, following the passing of the late Chairman David Reed.
With 30 years of public service experience under his belt and a strong record in community leadership, Young brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. His career has been varied, spanning law enforcement, the private sector, and public service.
Young began his career as a patrol officer with the Albertville Police Department in 1978. He later moved to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, where he served diligently. In 1984, he took a leap into the private sector, joining Sweda International/Innovax Concepts Corporation as president of the software development company. Returning to public service in 1994, Young held key roles at the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office, serving as Child Abuse Investigator, Drug Task Force Commander, Investigator, and ultimately Chief Investigator.
As Chairman, Young's extensive law enforcement background will be particularly valuable, especially as Marshall County prepares to build a new jail. He has expressed his commitment to serving the citizens of Marshall County with professionalism and dedication.
Throughout his career, Young has been actively involved in community service. He is a founding board member of at least four Marshall County crime victim services organisations and served as president/executive board member of the Alabama District Attorneys' Investigator Association. In 2024, Young was recognised as "Citizen of the Year" by the Guntersville Chamber of Commerce.
John Young and his wife, Karen, live in Langston in Marshall County. He is highly respected by local officials and citizens for his 30-years' public service. His appointment as Chairman of the Marshall County Commission is effective immediately.
Young considers it an honor to serve out the term left vacant by the passing of Chairman David Reed. He has expressed gratitude for the support received during the appointment process and intends to serve Marshall County citizens in a most professional way.
