Texas Gets Tough: Abbott Deploys National Guard at Protests Across Lone Star State

Greg Abbott, the proud governor of Texas, has made a bold move. He's planning to send the National Guard to several locations throughout the state, all during the heat of demonstrations. Ever since protests against U.S. President Donald Trump's hardline immigration policies hit Los Angeles, they've begun making their way across the states.

On Tuesday evening (local time), a series of arrests were made in LA when folks flouted the nighttime curfew that was imposed on a specific area downtown. The LA Police Department isn't shy about it: they're busy imposing order, according to their reports. The political confrontation between Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom has only ramped up tension.

According to the latest news from the San Antonio Express-News, Abbott has got his soldiers on-call, preparing for planned protests in Texas. He hasn't issued any specific details about the deployment, but San Antonio is seeing protests on Wednesday and Saturday.

Texas has been relatively peaceful during the protests, with Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio all experiencing peaceful demonstrations as per media reports.

In the era of National Guard deployments, it's fascinating to see the differences in how things are playing out. When the L.A. protests ignited due to Trump's immigration policies and ICE raids, the U.S. government deployed 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 regular military personnel to L.A. - despite Gavin Newsom's objections. These soldiers are arriving in stages and are expected to stick around until the danger subsides.

Trump's move escalates the situation significantly and sends a clear message. His strong-arm tactics are controversial, to say the least. On the other hand, the governor of Texas is deploying the National Guard in Texas alone, due to the protests.

LA Mayor Imposes Citywide Curfew, But Not Southern California

After the chaos in L.A., the city had no choice but to impose a nighttime curfew on a specific area. LA Mayor Karen Bass announced that the curfew would be in effect initially for Wednesday night (local time). However, as the night went on, 25 people were nabbed for allegedly violating the curfew. The police promptly began making "mass arrests" around 9 p.m. (local time), one hour after the curfew was implemented.

Government Power Struggles, Trump vs. Newsom

As the tension between Trump and California Governor Newsom escalates, the issue of government power has taken center stage. Trump accused Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass of collaborating with radical demonstrators in LA, claiming they encouraged lawless actions. Once again, there's no hard evidence to back up Trump's allegations.

In a surprising address to his citizens, Newsom took a swipe at Trump's policies. He argued that Trump is undermining the separation of powers in the U.S., weakening oversight and accountability mechanisms for corruption and fraud. He accused Trump of attacking culture and science, dictating university curricula, and targeting media and freedom of speech. Newsom went on to say that democracy is under attack before our very eyes.

Newsom criticized Trump for militarizing LA's streets, detaining immigrants, and causing distress throughout American communities. He stated that Trump is arresting people for minor offenses, like dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers, and seamstresses. "Authoritarian regimes start by targeting those least able to defend themselves," Newsom stated.
