Governor Kathy Hochul Endorses Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor

In a surprising turn of events, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has endorsed Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, for the position of New York City mayor. This endorsement comes ahead of the 2025 election, scheduled for November 4, 2025.

Mamdani, a candidate known for his focus on affordability and a desire to disband some NYPD units, has been leading in polls, with Andrew Cuomo trailing behind. Interestingly, both Cuomo and the current mayor, Eric Adams, are running on third-party lines.

The Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa, is also in the race, but Mamdani's endorsement by Hochul could potentially tip the scales in his favour. Hochul's endorsement could also help her in the 2023 gubernatorial election, as an alliance with Mamdani could help her win progressive votes in both the primary and general elections as she runs for a second full term next year.

Hochul's endorsement of Mamdani comes after a series of conversations about public safety and shared focus on affordability. However, it was the recent news reports about President Donald Trump and his allies' machinations to push Adams and Sliwa out of the race that likely influenced her decision.

Elise Stefanik, a prominent Republican, has used Hochul's endorsement of Mamdani as proof that she's not a moderate. Despite this, Hochul has made it clear that she wants to ensure she has someone who's not tainted or compromised in the mayoral position.

Mamdani has offered to invite Hochul to be part of discussions over his handling of the NYPD and selecting a police commissioner. This invitation could further strengthen the alliance between the two, especially since Hochul has had a good working relationship with Mayor Eric Adams.

However, this endorsement has not been without controversy. Hochul and Mamdani have had a strained history, with Hochul threatening to withhold funding from the state in response to Mamdani's endorsement by Kathy Hochul in his bid for a state assembly seat.

Despite this, it remains to be seen how this endorsement will impact the race for New York City mayor. With the election fast approaching, the city is eagerly awaiting the results of this political shift.
