Gov. Kathy Hochul is gearing up for her reelection bid next year, adopting a more combative posture as she navigates the political landscape in New York.

In a series of recent statements, Hochul has expressed frustration with the independent redistricting commission, a body established in 2014 with the goal of depoliticizing the decennial redistricting process to empower racial and ethnic minorities. The governor has criticized the commission, suggesting that it has tied her hands in certain policy areas.

Hochul's comments have raised eyebrows, particularly among progressive groups. Cesar Ruiz of the civil rights group Latino Justice finds Hochul's stance alarming, while John Kaehny, executive director of the watchdog group Reinvent Albany, questions where the redistricting arms race will end. Assemblymember Matt Slater, a Republican from Westchester County, has accused Hochul of not caring about what New Yorkers think or the rule of law, but rather focusing on partisan politics.

Republicans in Albany have also criticized Hochul, claiming her statements this week demonstrate hypocrisy and disregard for the rule of law.

Despite the criticism, Christina Greer, a professor of political science at Fordham University, expects the backlash against Hochul to be muted. Greer questions the concept of moderates, stating that it gets nothing because it will be steamrolled by the Republican Party's agenda.

Hochul's focus on redistricting is a strategic move, according to some political analysts. By taking a more combative stance, she is able to excite angry progressives without alienating moderates. This approach may help her in her reelection bid, as she seeks to rally support from both sides of the political spectrum.

Interestingly, Hochul has leapt onto the national stage this week alongside California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. However, she is not currently on any list as a future White House contender.

Hochul's recent appearances on MSNBC, two in four days, have helped to solidify her position as a prominent figure in the Democratic Party. As the 2024 election approaches, it will be interesting to see how Hochul continues to navigate the complex political landscape in New York and on the national stage.

In the meantime, Hochul has announced plans to use 'bare-knuckle tactics' to counter Republican plans to redraw congressional district lines in Texas. The governor's focus on redistricting is a clear indication that she is not backing down from the fight, and that she is determined to protect democracy in New York.

As the next planned redistricting in New York is not until 2032, it remains to be seen how the current debate over the independent redistricting commission will play out. One thing is certain, however: Gov. Kathy Hochul is not afraid to take a stand and fight for what she believes in.
