Governor Alia's Commissioner Nominees Rejected by Benue Assembly; Fresh Requirements Presented Instead
Benue State House of Assembly Rejects Governor's Commissioner Nominees
The Benue State House of Assembly has rejected Governor Hyacinth Alia's request to screen and confirm commissioner nominees. The Assembly's decision, announced by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Terver Zamber, comes after a series of grievances expressed towards the Governor.
The lawmakers have accused Governor Alia of disrespecting the Assembly during a plenary on Friday. They claim that the executive has consistently failed to honor the Assembly’s resolutions and has shown what legislators described as "total disregard" for the legislature.
The Assembly's grievance centers on the executive's neglect of prior agreements and lack of respect for the House's authority. Key issues include the governor's failure to implement or address critical issues previously raised by the legislature, lack of respect for the Assembly, and specific demands from the House such as the immediate provision of official vehicles to affected members.
The House has also demanded the enforcement of suspension notices issued to the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, and the executive secretary of the Benue State Sports Lottery and Marketing Board.
Thomas Dugeri, who seconded the motion, stated that Alia had not addressed several critical issues previously raised by the Assembly. Shimapever Jiji, who moved the motion of urgent public importance, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for the governor to demonstrate a commitment to prior agreements and respect the House's resolutions before commissioners are screened.
The Assembly clarified that their action is not intended to halt governance but to uphold their independence and compel the executive to fulfill its obligations and respect the rule of law. They resolved to reject any further correspondence from the governor until compliance with their demands is achieved.
The House's stance is not intended to stall governance but to uphold its independence and compel the executive to fulfill its obligations. They have listed their demands for the Governor, Hyacinth Alia, and are hopeful that the executive will address these concerns promptly to restore harmony between the two arms of government.
