Government's work prioritizes security, affirms Prime Minister
In a significant move, Latvia's government is taking steps to bolster the security and development of its eastern border region, as highlighted at a conference organised by the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee. The event, themed "Where are you going, border region? A vision for the development of the eastern border region in 2040", was attended by key figures including Saeima Vice Speaker Zanda Kalnina-Luksevica and Prime Minister Evika Silina.
Prime Minister Silina, a member of the New Unity party, emphasised the importance of dialogue in making critical decisions. She stated, "Only through conversation can decisions of public importance be taken." The conference served as a platform to evaluate the action plan for the growth and security of Latvia's eastern border regions.
Security is a top priority for the government, according to Prime Minister Silina. She underscored this by reading out her address at the conference, where she reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring safety for everyone, particularly in border areas. The government is currently working on next year's budget, which will be a security budget aimed at ensuring safety for all Latvians.
The conference also discussed the deployment of defense systems as a clear signal of commitment to protect every inch of the country and NATO territory. The military presence in the border area is being reinforced, with defense systems being deployed to bolster security.
In addition to security measures, the government is also focusing on economic development. Work is underway on a new fund for entrepreneurs to facilitate access to capital and boost job creation in the border region. Latvia is also preparing a development plan to promote life in the border region by providing jobs, education, and infrastructure.
The government's efforts to strengthen the Eastern border have garnered attention from European leaders. Latvia's experience and expertise in border defense are highly valued, and the country's contributions are seen as crucial in the European Commission's roadmap. The European Commission will soon publish a roadmap on "European Defense - Preparedness 2030", with a focus on strengthening the Eastern border.
Furthermore, the European Union has started negotiations on a new multiannual budget, which includes specific support for Eastern border regions. This support is expected to aid Latvia in its mission to develop the border region and improve the quality of life for its residents.
Prime Minister Silina regularly visits the border area and listens to the people living there. Her government is working hard to develop the border region, with security, education, job opportunities, and a well-kept environment being key focus areas.
Strengthening the Eastern border will play a special role in the European Commission's roadmap, as highlighted by Prime Minister Silina. The 2040 development plan for Latvia's eastern border, prepared by the government, focuses on strengthening and supporting the European Eastern Flank in response to the Russian threat, including investments in defense and security to protect the eastern NATO border from hybrid and conventional aggression.
The conference was organised by the Latgale Region Subcommittee of the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee, in cooperation with other organisations. The common understanding among European leaders is that the defense of the Eastern border is a shared responsibility, and Latvia is proud to play its part in this collective effort.
