Government's Inactivity Draws Criticism from Greens Regarding Aid to Gaza
In the heart of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, several organisations, including Doctors Without Borders (Ärzte ohne Grenzen), Caritas, Diakonie, SOS Children's Village, and others, have called upon the German federal government to take immediate action. They demand a permanent ceasefire, an end to the blockade of aid deliveries, and swift humanitarian measures.
The federal government, however, has faced criticism for not taking sufficient action to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza. Green spokesman Boris Mijatovic has been a vocal critic, pointing out the high number of civilian casualties in connection with aid distributions and the lack of political steps taken by Chancellor Merz to address the escalating humanitarian catastrophe.
Mijatovic's criticism extends to Foreign Minister Wadephul, who he accuses of abandoning his initially clear criticism of Israel's military operations in Gaza shortly after taking office. He considers the lack of political steps by Chancellor Merz and the abandonment of criticism by Foreign Minister Wadephul to be a "fatal signal".
The focus of the criticism has been the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which has been distributing food to needy people in Gaza on behalf of the Israeli government since late May. The GHF has come under fire for its distribution mechanism not reaching the civilian population and not operating according to humanitarian principles.
In a recent development, an agreement between the Israeli government and the EU, effective from July 10, aims to allow other aid organisations access to Gaza again. The federal government has praised the agreement but has warned that it must be implemented quickly and visibly.
Despite the agreement, Boris Mijatovic continues his criticism, further accusing the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation of not meeting humanitarian principles and not reliably reaching the needy population. He reiterates his call for the federal government to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza.
The federal government acknowledges the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza but faces continued criticism for not drawing any concrete consequences. As the situation in Gaza remains critical, the call for action from organisations and political figures like Boris Mijatovic continues to grow louder.
