Government's annual Salmon Catch by DFO hits 300,000 metric tons
The tenth meeting of Rosrybolovstvo headquarters took place recently, focusing on various issues related to the Pacific salmon fishery. One of the key points discussed was the fulfilment of the state assignment of FGBU "Glavrybvod" for the artificial reproduction of Pacific salmon.
Russia's fishermen have almost surpassed the initial forecast of industry science, with a catch of approximately 312,000 tons. The Kamchatka Krai, with over 247,200 tons of Pacific salmon caught, accounts for 62% of the total volume. The Khabarovsk Krai has also seen a significant increase, catching over 19,900 tons, an increase of 784 tons compared to 2023.
Sakhalin has processed 8,270 tons of Pacific salmon, and Chukotka has processed 319 tons. Meanwhile, the Magadan Oblast has caught over 12,200 tons, and the Primorsky Krai has caught over 8,800 tons. Sockeye and pink salmon are being caught in significant numbers, and the catch of chum salmon is expected to increase in the near future.
The meeting also included discussions on the course of fishing, scientific support, regulation of commercial and recreational fishing, and the work of the fisheries inspectorate. Issues related to ensuring the traditional way of life of indigenous small-numbered peoples in 2026 were discussed, with applications being accepted until September 1, 2025.
Starting September 1, 2025, a law will come into effect that provides for a unified period for the renewal of existing fishing contracts without auctions. The territorial management of Rosrybolovstvo is already working with users on this issue.
However, the search results do not provide information on the name of the head of the Russian Federal Research Center for Fisheries and Oceanography who provided the 23 scientific reasons for adjusting the predicted catch volume to 436,261 tons. The meeting did not mention any new catch volume or region-specific facts. Additionally, no new information about the life of Magadan or Magadan Oblast was provided in this meeting.
Despite these gaps in information, the meeting underscored the positive progress being made in the Pacific salmon fishery and the ongoing efforts to ensure its sustainable management and the protection of the traditional way of life of indigenous small-numbered peoples.
