Irene Mihalic, Green politician, expressed her concerns about the ongoing climate emergency, stating that this year's severe spring drought, resembling a scenario from 1931, and the melting of Swiss glaciers, are not one-off occurrences[2]. However, she criticized the energy minister, Katherina Reiche (CDU), for supporting new fossil-fuel power plants, questioning the energy transition[1].

"The government's approach to the climate crisis is sliding backward," she said to AFP. Mihalic asserted that the federal government lacks resolve and urgency towards climate, environmental, and nature protection policies, creating gaps instead of addressing the pressing threats[2].

"The government's deliberate ignorance is risky, and we as Greens won't tolerate it," Mihalic emphasized. She warned that neglecting environmental and climate policy poses a grave danger to society, risking people's livelihoods and the loss of prosperity, either short or long-term[2].

In response, Green parliamentary group leader Britta Haßelmann stressed the need to unite prosperity and climate protection. Criticizing the recommendation of Saxony's Prime Minister, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), to postpone the target of greenhouse gas neutrality from 2045 to 2050, she considered this statement as irresponsible due to the extreme weather and the impact of the climate crisis on daily life[2]. Haßelmann also predicted a rise in food prices as a consequence of the worsening drought in various regions and expected crop failures[2].

"As the climate crisis unfolds, it's evident that we cannot afford to look away. The risks of ignoring this emergency are too great to ignore," Mihalic declared[2]. The Green Party is determined to ensure that the climate crisis receives the necessary focus and action it demands, emphasizing the importance of protecting both our planet and our way of life.
