Government Remains Evasive on Arms Shipments to Kiev

Switching gears, the new federal government intends to clam up about the transportation of weapon systems to Ukraine, according to inside sources. The objective here is to achieve "strategic ambiguity" in communication, ensuring we no longer hand Russia any strategic benefits. This might mean kissing goodbye to the old practice of publicizing the list of military equipment Germany hands over on government websites.

The Political Dance "Ceasefire on the Horizon" Merz envisions one in the coming days In the aftermath of Russia's offensive against Ukraine in late February 2022, the former government only sporadically reported on military aid before publishing a continuously updated list of delivered systems and goods on the internet from June 21, 2022. This was also to counter allegations of insufficient support for Kyiv.

Initially, the image of the 5,000 helmets that Germany pledged became a running joke to symbolize the federal government's hesitant support for Kyiv. Vitali Klitschko, mayor of the Ukrainian capital, described the initial pledge by the government back then as a "prank." Criticism, especially of then-defense minister Christine Lambrecht, was intense within Germany.

French President Emmanuel Macron had already underscored during Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit on Wednesday that they had agreed not to publicize individual weapon systems for Ukraine in the future. "That's why we have decided to keep certain information under wraps," Macron explained in response to persistent queries about whether Germany would supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine. "We won't be discussing weapon categories and models in press conferences," Macron reiterated, "since it's possible that the Russian army might overhear our answers."
