Government Petitioned to Show Mercy Towards Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho, Previous Tinubu Associate Appeals
Former Campaign Spokesman Calls for Justice and Equity in Nigeria
In a statement released on Friday, Denge Onoh, the former South-East campaign spokesman for President Bola Tinubu, has urged for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho). Onoh also called for the removal of Igboho from the list of wanted individuals compiled by security agencies.
Onoh expressed concern about the current state of affairs in Nigeria, stating that failing to address the issues at hand would perpetuate division and undermine the government's legitimacy. He argued that the government's actions, such as prosecuting political agitators while reconciling with identified criminals, are not conducive to a just and equitable society.
Onoh cited the recent peace deals brokered with notorious bandits, including Isiya Garwa, one of Nigeria's 19 most-wanted terrorists, as an example of this issue. He argued that such peace deals undermine the rule of law and embolden criminals, as they send a message that violent acts can be forgiven if they serve a political purpose.
Onoh contrasted the actions of Kanu and Igboho with those of bandits like Garwa, who have orchestrated mass murder and extortion. He stated that releasing Kanu and Igboho would signal a commitment to equity over expediency, dialogue over detention, and true security over selective impunity.
Onoh also highlighted the dire situation in Nigeria, stating that at least 2,266 Nigerians were killed by bandits and insurgents in the first half of 2025. He warned that such violence would continue unless the government takes decisive action to address the root causes of the conflict and uphold the rule of law.
Onoh emphasized the need for justice and equity, stating that it should be the turning point where justice unites, not divides. He argued that by releasing political prisoners like Kanu and Igboho, the government can demonstrate its commitment to these values and begin to heal the divisions within the nation.
The person currently in detention and for whom an amnesty plea has been made to President Bola Tinubu is the activist Omoyele Sowore, who faces cybercrime and defamation charges related to critical posts about the president on social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. Onoh's statements regarding Sowore were not included in the statement released on Friday.
