Government Officially Announces Apprehension of Prominent Terrorist Commander in Niger
In a significant development in the ongoing fight against terrorism, the Nigerian Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Abubakar Abba, the alleged mastermind and leader of the Mahmuda terrorist group. This group is an offshoot of Boko Haram with reported links to the Islamic State.
The arrest took place in Wawa town, Bogu local government area of Niger State, without any shots fired. Abba has since been transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
The capture of Abba is seen as a major security breakthrough, especially in the fight against terrorism in Niger and Kwara states. The Mahmuda group has been responsible for numerous violent attacks across these states, operating from forested hideouts and engaging in illegal mining, forced labor, and extortion in communities such as Bogu.
Governor Mohammed Bago's Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, hailed the operation as a breakthrough in the fight against insecurity. Ibrahim stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves commendation for this arrest. Governor Bago also commended the DSS for the successful mission, describing it as a significant step toward restoring peace and security in the North-Central region.
The Mahmuda group's activities have disrupted local economies and forced residents to flee their homes. The group has been accused of striking communities near Kainji Lake National Park, attacking markets, killing locals, and abducting scores of people.
Recent attacks by the Mahmuda group include two separate assaults in Kwara state on June 3, which resulted in the death of 7 villagers. Other attacks in the region left several residents abducted and at least 15 vigilantes dead in Kemanji village.
The Mahmuda group's operations have been ongoing in forested areas linking several states in the North-Central region. Security reports indicate that the group established strongholds in forested areas linking Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Kogi states.
In these strongholds, the group is reported to have engaged in illegal mining, forced labor, and extortion of farmers and herders. The group's activities have left communities in constant fear, with repeated attacks disrupting local economies and forcing residents to flee.
Abba was captured alive during the operation, which demonstrates President Tinubu's commitment to ending insecurity. The arrest of Abba disrupts the operational capacity of a violent militant faction that has deeply entrenched itself in parts of Niger and Kwara states, potentially reducing local instability and enhancing regional security.
Authorities believe that strong intelligence, as demonstrated in this operation, is critical to effectively fighting terrorism. The arrest of Abubakar Abba is a testament to the Nigerian government's commitment to combating terrorism in the region.
