Government official, Paetongtarn, articulates lack of intention to repatriate Cambodian workers.
Headline:Thai PM Confirms No Deportation Plan for Cambodian Workers Amid Border Tensions
Subheading:PM Paetongtarn guarantees respect for human rights and national interest, as Cambodia prepares for potential repatriation.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra clarified on Sunday that her government has no intention to expel Cambodian workers as speculated by some, while emphasizing the nation's openness to diversity and respect for human rights rights.
Amid escalating tensions between the neighboring countries, Paetongtarn's statement came in response to Cambodia's readiness to repatriate workers currently employed in Thailand. In her message across her Facebook and Twitter pages, the Thai prime minister underscored that Thailand remains sympathetic to foreign workers, providing fair treatment and legal welfare.
"We prioritize unity, not division. COEXISTENCE, NOT CONFRONTATION," Paetongtarn asserted, making it clear her government has no order for mass deportations. However, she acknowledged the right of workers to make their own decisions if offered employment opportunities back home.
The Thai leader has been met with some criticism for seemingly being lenient towards Cambodia due to close ties between her father, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen.
Paetongtarn, however, maintained that she prioritizes the national interest above all and will not politicize bilateral relations. "I value THAI UNITY and NATIONAL INTEREST above all else," she emphasized, adding that any actions initiated between the two countries must be preceded by national considerations for the wellbeing of both nations.
