Government official of high rank arrested for suspected corruption in relation to sponsorships of the Dubai orchid project
A senior government officer, in his 40s and serving as a principal assistant director of a government department, has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the Dubai Orchid Export Farm project.
The officer was taken into custody yesterday evening at 6.30pm at the MACC's headquarters in Putrajaya. He was arrested under investigation for soliciting and receiving sponsorships for overseas trips linked to the project.
The Dubai Orchid Export Farm project, valued at an estimated RM125 million, is under scrutiny as part of the investigation. The investigation also involves travel sponsorships believed to be worth more than RM50,000, which the suspect allegedly solicited and received from several companies and individuals between March 2023 and January 2025.
The trips were scheduled during this period, with the destinations not yet disclosed. The sponsorships were intended to finance these trips, which are believed to be in connection with the Dubai Orchid Export Farm project.
Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin issued a four-day remand order for the suspect. The remand order is effective until Aug 23, 2023. The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which deals with the corrupt solicitation, receiving, or agreement to receive any gratification.
The MACC has not released any further details about the case at this time. However, it is clear that this investigation is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Malaysia.
The public is reminded that any form of corruption undermines the integrity of our nation and hinders the prosperity of its people. If you have any information regarding this or any other corruption case, please contact the MACC or report it anonymously through their hotline. Together, we can help build a Malaysia that is free from corruption.
