Government of Lebanon urges army to finalize weaponry accumulation strategy by the end of the year

The Lebanese government has approved a plan, backed by the United States, to fully disarm Hezbollah and all other armed groups by December 31, 2025. The decision was made following a marathon five-hour session by the Lebanese government, with the first phase requiring formal government commitment within 15 days of approval.

The plan, which aims to restore state sovereignty, was adopted amid significant internal divisions. Hezbollah and its Shi’a allies oppose the plan, and some ministers walked out in protest.

Key aspects of the plan include:

  • A preparatory phase where Lebanon formally commits constitutionally to disarm Hezbollah and other militias by the end of 2025.
  • The Lebanese Army tasked with submitting an implementation plan by August 31, 2025, to guide disarmament efforts.
  • Establishment of approximately 15 Lebanese military posts south of the Litani River, a strategic area where Hezbollah currently holds significant power.
  • Enforcement of disarmament promises aiming to transfer heavy weapons like missiles and drones from Hezbollah to the Lebanese Army.
  • Resumption of supervisory meetings involving the U.S., France, and UN to monitor progress.
  • Israel would halt military activities in Lebanon during the first phase, allowing access to Hezbollah’s military infrastructure for verification.

Despite government approval, Hezbollah has rejected the decision, calling it a "grave mistake" and stating it will treat the plan "as if it doesn't exist." This stance mirrors Iran's support for Hezbollah's position.

The Lebanese cabinet resolution has been praised by U.S. officials as an “important step toward Lebanese sovereignty,” but it remains a source of deep political tension within Lebanon.

In summary, while the Lebanese government has formally adopted the plan to disarm Hezbollah by the end of 2025, implementation faces serious internal resistance from Hezbollah and allied political factions, making the plan’s success uncertain at this stage.

  1. The political tension within Lebanon heightens as the Lebanese government's decision to disarm Hezbollah is met with resistance, with Hezbollah and its allies treating the plan as if it doesn't exist.
  2. The approval of the plan to disarm Hezbollah by the Lebanese government is not only surrounded by internal conflicts but also global politics, as it收Workspace的文件概览
