Government Launches Online Bail Bond System to Fight Harassment and Corruption
The government is set to launch an online bail bond submission system on Wednesday, aiming to reduce harassment and corruption in the bail order process. Asif Nazrul, law, justice and parliamentary affairs adviser, will inaugurate the system at a function in Narayanganj.
The new system, part of the judiciary's digitalisation, will allow bail bonds to be submitted online, reaching concerned jails with a single click. This eliminates the need for manual submission, which previously involved 12 layers of bureaucracy, leading to delays and opportunities for corruption. The attorney general has criticised the poor quality of legal drafting and case presentation by many lawyers, as well as weak reasoning in some judgments. To address this, the Office of the Attorney General plans to train 200 law interns each year from reputed universities. This internship programme aims to help law graduates develop into skilled lawyers, emphasising the importance of strong training and practical experience. Legendary advocates like Khandaker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, and former chief justice Mostafa Kamal are cited as examples of excellent lawyers who did not rely on degrees from renowned public universities.
The launch of the online bail bond submission system is expected to significantly streamline the bail order process, reducing harassment and corruption. The government's commitment to training law interns also signals a push to improve the overall quality of legal practice in the country.
