Key Updates

Hate Speech Crackdown Across Germany

Under the leadership of the Federal Criminal Police Office, police forces nationwide have conducted raids against suspected authors of hate speech and incitement online. Over 180 measures were carried out concerning more than 140 investigations. The accused individuals are being probed for various offenses such as incitement to violence, defamation, and insulting politicians.

Impact Locally:

In Saxony-Anhalt, there were 12 measures resulting from 16 criminal online postings. In Saxony, the police have targeted 14 suspects, and searches were also part of the operations. In Thuringia, the authorities are examining 29 cases, with investigations into such matters as incitement to hatred, defamation, and displaying unconstitutional symbols.

Reactions

Interior Minister Herbert Reul of North Rhine-Westphalia spoke about the action: "Digital arsonists should not be allowed to hide behind their phones or computers." Many have forgotten what constitutes hate speech and free speech, he added. The official emphasized that actions online should adhere to basic standards of conduct applied offline.

Further Information

The focus of the investigations is on far-right statements. However, hate speech against various marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals, has been on the rise in Germany and other parts of Europe since 2019. These developments reflect a broader backlash against gender equality and rights for minorities.
