Just like the rest of the country, the cops in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern aren't playing games when it comes to hate and incitement online. In fact, they're a significant part of a nationwide effort to stamp it out—without the classic search-and-seizure tactics, though.

The state Criminal Police Office (CEK) confirmed with the German Press Agency that they've got a suspect lined up for an interrogation in Neubrandenburg today. This case involves hurlings of slurs aimed at certain political bigwigs, and a certain AfD member, Alice Weidel, is in the hot seat.

"Online nastiness isn't an acceptable means of airing opinions," said Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD). "Today's nationwide operation sends a clear message: We're not turning a blind eye. Law enforcement in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and across the nation are making a stand against digital aggression. Every attack on human dignity, diversity, and free thinking is off-limits."

A total of over 180 police measures are being implemented nationwide against criminal hateful posts today. In this round-up, around 65 search warrants have been issued, and numerous suspects interrogated. The BKA leads the charge on this operation, which takes place annually.

According to the Interior Ministry, a whopping 287 hate posts were reported in 2024, compared to just 154 in the year prior.

In this latest operation, North Rhine-Westphalia, and undoubtedly other regions, have joined in. Across Germany, police forces have been cracking down relentlessly on individuals who spew hateful, racist, xenophobic, far-right or extremist content, principally on social media platforms. Suspects are finding themselves charged for incitement, insulting politicians, and glorifying rhetoric from the Nazi era.

This nationwide operation is the 12th such action and is part of an ongoing, multi-year initiative to combat politically motivated online offenses. While no specific figures for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are available for this current operation, all federal states are involved, indicating that the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region is part of the wider effort.
