Flood Recovery Efforts Underway in Điện Biên Province

Swift recovery efforts are underway in Điện Biên Province following severe flash floods and landslides on August 1, 2025. The disaster, which affected several northern provinces, including Điện Biên, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, and Quang Ninh, has resulted in casualties and displacement.

The confirmed death toll stands at 9 people with 3 reported missing due to the natural disaster. Around 60 houses have been swept away or severely damaged, mainly in the Xa Dung and Ta Dinh communes, while 171 more houses in Mường Luân, Na Son, Tuần Giáo, and Phình Giàng communes were flooded or partially damaged. Two children were among those buried by landslides in Xa Dung commune.

Local authorities, including provincial military and police forces, are engaged in urgent rescue and evacuation operations. Residents from isolated and flooded villages such as Suối Lu 1, 2, 3 (Na Son commune) and other affected areas are being evacuated and moved to safer locations. However, many villages remain isolated due to damage on national and provincial roads caused by landslides, complicating relief and rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinch signed a dispatch on August 1, calling for swift recovery efforts in flood-ravaged Điện Biên Province. The Chairman of the provincial People's Committee in Điện Biên Province has been ordered to direct and mobilize necessary forces and vehicles for search and rescue efforts. The Government delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, inspected damage and overseen relief efforts in the affected provinces on August 1.

The Government leader emphasized the importance of restoring transport infrastructure for the flow of emergency aid and safety protocols for search and rescue workers. The Ministers of National Defence and Public Security have been directed to coordinate with local forces for search operations and disaster recovery efforts.

The Television, Voice, and News Agency of the website were urged to provide timely and accurate updates on weather conditions and raise public awareness of disaster preparedness. The dispatch did not mention the need for temporary shelters, food, or essential items for displaced people.

In Sơn La Province, heavy rainfall led to severe flooding, necessitating the evacuation of dozens of households. However, the dispatch did not mention any new deaths, missing people, or damaged houses or roads in Sơn La Province, nor any new locations affected by landslides or flash floods.

The Prime Minister extended his condolences to the families of the victims and shared their loss with the affected communities. The disaster occurred on August 1, and the Government is working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected.
