Government initiates reassessment of operational strategies for Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports, as per the PM's directive
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinch has initiated a comprehensive review of the operation plans for both Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports, aiming to ensure a smooth transition and growth for Vietnam's aviation industry.
The review of Long Thanh's development, located in Dong Nai Province, has been instructed by the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Construction. A report on the matter is due before September 27. However, the name of the working group leader responsible for the overview and planning of the Long Thanh Airport construction remains undisclosed, according to recent reports.
Long Thanh Airport, with ambitions to become a key transit center for Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, is currently under construction. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam is spearheading its development as a modern international hub.
In the first stage, Long Thanh is expected to initially share part of Tan Son Nhat's load and focus on cargo. An effective transition from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh will require a clear and synchronised plan for infrastructure, services, and commerce. Urban planning expert Ngo Viet Nam Son proposes a phased approach for developing Long Thanh Airport, suggesting that it should not be overloaded from the start, and adjustments should be made step by step to ensure passenger convenience and economic efficiency.
The Government is pushing for the speedy construction of Long Thanh, with the goal of completing the project by the end of 2025 and opening for operations by mid-2026. However, no final decision has been reached on moving all international flights from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City to Long Thanh.
The Labor newspaper has reported different proposals for balancing the operations of the two major airports. Parallel operations with Tan Son Nhat are necessary to avoid disruption during the transition. Uong Viet Dung, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, stated that they have yet to finalise a plan and are still gathering opinions from experts and passengers.
Long Thanh's ultimate goal is to grow into a leading Southeast Asian hub, integrated with a free trade zone, airport city, and high-speed transport links, similar to models in Singapore and Amsterdam. The second stage of Long Thanh's development will occur once transport systems and the airport city are in place, allowing for more international flights to be moved.
As the review process continues, the future of Vietnam's aviation industry is set to take off with the development of modern airports that will contribute significantly to the country's economic growth and regional connectivity.
