Germany's Black-Red Federal Government Unveils 118 Initiatives in First 100 Days

In the first 100 days of its term, the current German federal government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has launched a total of 118 initiatives. These initiatives span a broad range of areas, reflecting a focused approach to defense, infrastructure, immigration control, security coordination, foreign policy, labor reform, and economic investment.

One of the most significant initiatives is a €500 billion infrastructure and climate protection investment program. This program, aimed at boosting the economy and addressing environmental concerns, includes investments in roads, railways, schools, and climate protection projects.

Another key initiative is the strengthening of border controls. The government has initiated tighter border controls and extended border checks beyond September, alongside organizing additional deportation flights to countries like Afghanistan and Syria to address irregular immigration.

The black-red federal government has also established a National Security Council, chaired by the Chancellor, to better coordinate security policy expertise and develop strategies for crises and threats. This council involves key ministers and representatives from federal states, the EU, and NATO.

In the realm of foreign policy, the government has focused on demonstrating European unity, with a high-profile visit to Kyiv and meetings with global leaders such as US President Donald Trump.

The government has also planned reforms in labor regulations, such as changing the Working Hours Act to allow weekly instead of daily maximum working time. Additionally, it has launched investment initiatives dubbed "Made for Germany," encouraging investments in R&D, digitization, and infrastructure to create qualified jobs and secure employment.

However, the government has faced criticism from economists for slow progress on structural reforms and measures that may negatively impact long-term growth. Despite this, the black-red federal government remains committed to its initiatives and continues to work towards a secure and prosperous future for Germany.

The black-red federal government began its term on May 6, 2021, and the first 100 days will end on Thursday. The deputy government spokesman, Steffen Meyer, stated that a policy change has been initiated in many areas.

The government is also promoting e-mobility and housing construction, with initiatives aimed at boosting the adoption of electric vehicles and increasing the construction of affordable homes.

This investment program was decided upon before the formation of the government, demonstrating a clear commitment to these initiatives from the outset. The black-red federal government is a coalition government and the current federal government, with its term not yet over as of the given date.
