India Denies Knowledge of Anti-Bangladesh Activities by Awami League Leaders

In a recent development, the Bangladeshi government has expressed concern over the establishment of political offices of the Awami League, a major political party in Bangladesh, on Indian soil. However, the Indian government has clarified that it has not been asked to take any specific actions regarding the closure of these offices.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh issued a statement today reporting the establishment of offices of the Bangladesh Awami League in Delhi and Kolkata. The Bangladeshi government has urged the Indian government not to permit or support any activities that could be harmful to Bangladesh's interests.

The interim government of Bangladesh has not specified the nature of the harmful activities it is concerned about. Reports in Indian media affirm increasing overtures of the Awami League while being on Indian soil.

The Indian government, through the Ministry of External Affairs, has stated that they are not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities by purported members of the Awami League in India or of any action that is contrary to Indian law. Indian soil is not permitted for political activities against other countries.

The Bangladeshi government has requested India to prevent Bangladeshi nationals residing there from engaging in activities harmful to Bangladesh's interests. This development poses a risk to the good-neighbourly relations with India and could have serious implications for the political transformation in Bangladesh.

The interim government of Bangladesh claims that the Awami League's leadership has been undertaking anti-Bangladesh activities from Indian soil. Some senior leaders of the Awami League, absconding in several criminal cases in Bangladesh, remain in the Indian territory. Political leaders of the Bangladesh Awami League suspected by India of activities harming Bangladesh's interests include Tarique Rahman and Sajeeb Wazed, with their political offices reportedly located in West Bengal, India.

On 21 July 2025 evening, some senior leaders of the Awami League, under the guise of an NGO, planned to hold a public outreach at the Delhi Press Club. This event, if it had taken place, would have added to the concerns of the Bangladeshi government.

Dhaka has expressed concern that this may trigger public sentiment in Bangladesh, which may impact the ongoing efforts of the two countries in enhancing their relationship. The Indian government reiterates its expectation for free, fair, and inclusive elections to be held in Bangladesh at the earliest to ascertain the will and mandate of the people.

The exact location of the offices of the Bangladesh Awami League in Delhi and Kolkata was not disclosed in the statement. The press statement issued by the interim government of Bangladesh is misplaced according to the Indian government. The Indian government does not allow political activities against other countries to be carried out from Indian soil.
