Germany's cultural landscape is all set to bustle with energy once again as COVID-19 restrictions ease, following the relaxation of measures for football stadiums. With this newfound freedom, the call for the revival of large-scale cultural events is gaining momentum.
Johannes Selle, Deputy Chairman of the Culture Committee in the German Bundestag, expressed his opinion to Redaktionsnetzwerks Deutschland, stating that equal treatment should be prioritized across all sectors of life. Selle acknowledges the strong influence of football lobbies but stresses that cultural events deserve equal attention and efforts.
Minister of Culture, Monika Grütters' office echoes Selle's sentiments, encouraging pragmatic solutions to initiate a cultural renaissance. Each event, each space, according to Grütters' spokesperson, should be assessed individually to strike a balance between infection protection and cultural enjoyment.
In the coming weeks, several federal states have planned to allow large cultural events with over 1,000 visitors, such as in Saxony-Anhalt from November, and in Berlin and Lower Saxony from October. Currently, Bavaria's limit stands at 400 guests outdoors and 200 guests indoors. However, despite the state premiers' best efforts, a national consensus on uniform rules has yet to be reached, reminiscent of the football spectacle.
