Government directs solemn funeral procession

In the heart of Germany, we bid farewell to Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Böhmer, a distinguished figure who left an indelible mark on the worlds of medicine, academia, and politics. Born in Dürrhennersdorf, Saxony, in 1936, Böhmer spent his formative years in a farming family before embarking on a remarkable journey that would shape his life and the lives of many others.

Böhmer's medical career began at Karl-Marx-Universität Leipzig, where he earned his medical doctorate in 1959. His dissertation focused on ventricular extrasystoles, a significant contribution to the field of cardiology. He later specialized in gynecology and obstetrics, becoming a recognized specialist in 1966. Over the next three decades, he served as senior physician and later as chief physician at hospitals in Görlitz and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

In addition to his medical expertise, Böhmer made significant scholarly contributions. In 1983, he habilitated at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, presenting a work on the development of individual and societal burdens related to human reproduction. He was also a co-author of four volumes in a research series on the city history of Lutherstadt Wittenberg, reflecting his engagement with the historical development of health and social systems in that region.

Böhmer's political career took off in 1990 when he joined the CDU (Christian Democratic Union). His most significant political role was serving as the Minister-President of the German state of Sachsen-Anhalt from May 2002 to April 2011. During his tenure, he led the regional government with distinction, serving as a beacon of stability and progress for nearly a decade.

As a mark of respect for this esteemed leader, half-mast flags will be flown at all state buildings in Sachsen-Anhalt from July 7 to 9, 2025. A condolence book will also be available at the State Chancellery during this period, providing an opportunity for the public to pay their respects and remember the life and legacy of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Böhmer.

Böhmer passed away on June 29, 2025, in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and guide. His life serves as a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and a commitment to service, a legacy that will undoubtedly live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched.
