The German government, at a recent cabinet meeting, has proposed drafts to tackle issues regarding migration and rent control. Notably, the government intends to temporarily restrict family reunifications for refugees classified as "subsidiary protection holders" for a period of two years. This group includes individuals granted temporary protection due to serious threats in their countries of origin, but not officially recognized as refugees under the Geneva Convention.

Justifying this measure, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt argued that it is necessary to lighten the burden on local councils responsible for integration and accommodation, citing successful implementation of similar measures during the European migration crisis between 2016 and 2018.

The government has also retracted the faster citizenship rule, which previously enabled well-integrated migrants to apply for German citizenship after just three years of residency. This policy change will revert to the earlier standard of a five-year residency requirement. This move is part of a broader effort to tighten immigration regulations and eliminate incentives that might encourage unlawful migration.

Regarding rent control (Mietpreisbremse), while specific details on the recent extension during the cabinet meeting were not found, the issue has been a focus of ongoing policy discussions aimed at easing housing affordability pressures in Germany. This issue is often interlinked with broader integration and social stability initiatives accompanying migration policy reforms.

  1. The EC countries are monitoring the recent moves by the German government in its employment policy, including the temporarily restricting family reunifications for refugees and the retracting the faster citizenship rule, as these changes aim to tighten immigration regulations.
  2. As the German government tackles issues regarding migration and rent control, current political debates stretch beyond these specific measures, also encompassing the broader role of general-news events, such as the European migration crisis and housing affordability pressures, in shaping employment policy and long-term integration outcomes.
