Government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parties consider dialogue as Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) waited on proceedings against Waqas.

The ongoing efforts to ease tensions and initiate dialogue between the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have taken a promising turn, with a cautiously optimistic atmosphere emerging following a meeting at the National Assembly Speaker's Office.

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, was facilitated by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who has been actively working to improve communication between both sides. The PTI delegation, which included some recently convicted parliamentarians, expressed their support for dialogue despite PTI leader Imran Khan's reluctance to engage directly with the government.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and some government leaders, such as PMLN's Rana Sanaullah, have expressed their willingness to engage PTI, and the government has repeatedly extended offers for dialogue, including during recent National Assembly sessions. However, the PTI questions the government's authority to initiate dialogue, and some internal apprehensions exist due to unelected advisers potentially encouraging policies such as mass resignations by PTI lawmakers.

The potential outcomes of this dialogue include the possible stabilization of relations between the government and PTI, enabling smoother parliamentary functioning. It could also prevent further political escalation or en bloc resignations by PTI members. Moreover, a platform to discuss key national issues could ease political tensions and advance governance.

However, there remains uncertainty largely centered on Imran Khan’s stance, who, despite being imprisoned, remains the symbolic leader of PTI. His opposition or acceptance could critically influence the success of negotiations.

In an effort to overcome Khan's resistance, PTI lawmakers are considering meeting him in groups to persuade him to support the talks. Senior PPP leader Syed Naveed Qamar has also urged PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and former speaker Asad Qaiser to resort to political options.

The government allies, PML-N and PPP, are ready to help PTI in normalizing its politics. The National Assembly Speaker, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry accommodated PTI's delegation during the meeting.

Despite the establishment's lack of interest in engaging in dialogue with PTI, the current status of the dialogue between the federal government and PTI is hopeful, with significant involvement from PTI parliamentarians and facilitation by the Speaker’s office. The success of the dialogue, however, depends on overcoming Imran Khan’s resistance and managing internal party dynamics.
