"One Battle After Another" wins at Gotham Awards - Gotham Awards 2025: Jafar Panahi and Paul Thomas Anderson Dominate Early Oscars Buzz

The 2025 Gotham Awards have crowned this year’s top films, with Jafar Panahi’s A Simple Accident taking three major prizes. The Iranian political drama secured Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature. Meanwhile, Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic thriller One Battle After Another claimed the night’s highest honour: Best Film of the Year.

The Gotham Awards, held annually since 1991, kick off the film awards season with winners chosen by New York critics and filmmakers. This year’s ceremony saw Jafar Panahi’s A Simple Accident dominate despite its earlier nominations—not wins—at the 2026 European Film Awards. The film, France’s official Oscar submission for 2026, will also premiere in German cinemas on December 11.

The Gotham Awards have once again highlighted films likely to feature in upcoming ceremonies. A Simple Accident now heads into the Oscars race with three Gotham wins, while One Battle After Another solidifies its place as a frontrunner. The results set the stage for a competitive awards season ahead.
