Göring-Eckardt Urges Federal Government to Prepare for Extended Lockdown and Improve Support for Freelancers

Green Party faction leader Katrin Göring-Eckardt has called on the federal government to prepare for several months of lockdown beyond November and to improve the situation of freelancers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Göring-Eckardt has criticised the referral of freelancers to Hartz IV, Germany's unemployment benefit, plus 25 percent of their turnover. She has demanded improvements in the situation of freelancers for the entire duration of the pandemic, stating that many have received almost no support for eight months.

In a similar vein, Göring-Eckardt has called on Finance Minister Olaf Scholz to drop his resistance to a real entrepreneur's allowance. She has argued that such a measure is necessary to support the self-employed and small businesses during this challenging time.

Regarding the corona warning app, Göring-Eckardt has suggested that it should develop into a corona information portal and support the detection of infection clusters. She has also demanded an update for the app, aiming for it to become more attractive to use and effectively support the work of health authorities.

Göring-Eckardt has praised the efforts of many private initiatives developing the corona warning app without a budget. However, she has expressed concern that the app's current state may not be sufficient to effectively combat the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, Economics Minister Peter Altmaier has predicted significant restrictions in the next four to five months. Chancellor Angela Merkel and the state premiers will discuss how to proceed after the November lockdown in a video conference on Monday.

The post-November lockdown strategy will be a key discussion point in the video conference. Göring-Eckardt has urged the federal government to prepare for several lockdown months and to ensure that adequate support is in place for those most affected, including freelancers and the self-employed.

It remains unclear who announced that the government would drop the real entrepreneur permit and improve the situation of freelancers for the entire duration of the Corona pandemic. More information on this matter is expected to be discussed in the upcoming video conference.
