Restored: Public Access to Gorch Fock 1 Resumes for Visitors - "Gorch Fock 1" welcomes back tourists
Get ready to set foot on a piece of maritime history! The timeless sailing ship, Gorch Fock 1, nestled in the heart of Stralsund, a bustling Hanseatic city, is back and open to the public! Starting today, you can catch a glimpse of this historic marvel every day from 10:00am to 5:00pm. For now, only the majestic upper decks are open for exploration. Behind the scenes, preparations for the second phase of the meticulous restoration of this masterpiece are in full swing!
Undergoing a massive 10 million euro revamp in the past, the ship - a century-old beauty built by Blohm & Voss in 1933 - was restored to ensure its seaworthiness, safety of the rigging, and adequate fire protection. Dubbed the "Gorch Fock" in honor of the literary trailblazer, Carl Peter Heinrich Gotthilf von Groth (1880-1916), this ship had a tumultuous past. After World War II, it was relinquished to the Soviet Union as part of war reparations. There was a twist of fate in its story though; in 2003, the "Tall Ship Friends" association acquired the ship from Ukraine, securing its safe passage to Stralsund. Interestingly, this relic is the sister ship to the current sailing training ship of the German Navy, also christened Gorch Fock!
Remember, while the exact start date of the second phase of renovation might not be readily available, you can always check official maritime or naval press releases for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Happy sailing (historical) voyages!
