GOP Subtly Urges Trump: Steer Clear of Conceding to Putin's Wishes
Senator Thom Tillis, in a recent appearance on CBS Mornings, issued a stern warning against giving Russian President Vladimir Putin any semblance of a victory, fearing it could bolster Putin's belief in the world's subjugation under totalitarian rule.
The apprehension over a potential peace deal between the US and Russia is not limited to Tillis. Many Republican lawmakers and media personalities, often referred to as Russia hawks, have voiced their concerns.
Representative Don Bacon supports peace negotiations but questions the timing and the implications of President Donald Trump's comments about Ukraine making peace tomorrow. He suggests that such a statement could be interpreted as a call for Ukraine to surrender to Russia's invasion.
Senator Lindsey Graham has expressed similar concerns, warning that Putin might pay too high a price in any peace agreement. Graham also cautions against any "land swaps" that could recognise parts of Ukraine as under Russian control, as it could embolden China to attempt a similar takeover of Taiwan.
Senator Ted Cruz encourages Trump to secure a peace deal that results in a clear loss for Russia and Putin. Senator Roger Wicker, meanwhile, praises Trump, referencing Mark Levin's warning about Putin.
Mark Levin, a Fox News host, has been vocal about Russia's territorial ambitions and the failures of past efforts like the Budapest Memorandum to curb them. Levin also stated that Putin cannot control himself. Sean Hannity, another Fox News host, agrees with this sentiment, stating it would be unwise to reward Putin's aggression.
A Gallup poll shows that 7 in 10 Americans are at least "somewhat" worried a peace deal would be too favourable to Russia. A recent Fox News poll also shows that 58% of Americans believe Putin has the upper hand on Trump ahead of their summit.
These concerns are not new. Large numbers of Americans have long held the view that Trump is too favourable to Putin. However, the recent surge in vocal opposition from within the Republican party and Trump's media allies suggests a growing unease about the potential outcomes of any peace deal with Russia.
Representative Joe Wilson has repeatedly praised Trump for seeing through Putin's lies. However, the idea that Trump sees through Putin's tactics is debatable. Regardless, the consensus among many is that any peace deal must not be at the expense of Ukraine's sovereignty or the global community's principles.
