GOP representative, Rep. Bacon, advocates for party support of Ukraine in its conflict against Russia
Rep. Don Bacon Announces Retirement, Challenges White House on Ukraine Support
Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) has announced he will not seek re-election in a competitive swing district, but not before challenging the White House to do more in supporting Ukraine in their war efforts against Russia.
Bacon, a self-proclaimed Ronald Reagan-style Republican, has been vocal about the ongoing conflict and believes that President Donald Trump is on the wrong side of history in this fight. He expects more from a Republican President, especially in terms of supporting Ukraine.
The Nebraska representative stated that Putin wants to restore his old borders, and he takes Putin's words seriously. Bacon believes that if Russia's President Putin continues on his current path, American security could be impacted. He is deeply concerned about the future of the world order.
Bacon has been actively advocating for legislative action arming Ukraine and sanctioning Russia and its allies. He supports secondary sanctions and has been the first Republican to get on a democratic bill to discharge one to force a vote on the floor.
Countries potentially affected by continued Russian expansion include neighboring post-Soviet states such as Ukraine and Georgia, as well as those along Russia's eastern and western borders including the Baltic states, Poland, and possibly other Eastern European countries bordering NATO, given ongoing tensions and military interventions.
Bacon's interview follows several fiery social media posts where he directly called out Donald Trump. He expressed that he is an American before he is a partisan and that he hopes to have lived up to the standard of consensus building.
Bacon identifies as a Republican who believes in peace through strength. He stated that there should be less partisanship and more working together, according to the constitution.
Bacon also mentioned that China and India are largely propping up the Russian economy. This economic support from China and India could be a significant factor in Russia's ability to continue its aggressive actions.
As Bacon prepares to leave office, he aims to ensure he leaves a legacy he is proud of for Nebraska and himself. His retirement comes at a critical time in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and his departure from Congress may leave a void in the advocacy for stronger support for Ukraine.
