Google's dissolution - Weimer suggests the optimal solution
In a recent interview on the "Berlin Playbook" podcast by Politico, German Cultural Minister Wolfram Weimer expressed concern over the growing influence of tech giant Google in Germany and called for stronger regulation at the European Union (EU) level.
Weimer asserted that Google's actions pose a significant threat to the free formation of opinion in Germany, as well as the democratic foundation of the country. He believes that the tech giant's market power is a threat to the democratic process, and that it gives nothing back to German society.
The minister criticized Google for paying virtually no taxes in Germany, routing funds through Dublin to avoid paying its fair share. He also accused Google of altering the media landscape in Germany, with its vast influence and huge margins.
Weimer's concerns are not limited to Google. He emphasized that the EU's digital laws also affect other tech giants such as Amazon, Apple, Meta (Facebook), and Microsoft. The EU regulations primarily focus on antitrust laws, data privacy, content moderation, and enhancing competition to prevent market dominance abuses.
The EU's digital laws also aim to combat the spread of misinformation on platforms like X. However, the US government has demanded changes to these strict EU digital laws, fearing that they could negatively impact American companies like Google.
In response, US President Donald Trump has threatened state retaliation after the EU imposed a competition fine on Google. If US corporations continue to be fined, Trump may initiate a new tariff procedure.
Weimer's call for the dismantling of Google is not an isolated incident. The handling of US corporations by Germany and the EU is connected to the ongoing trade dispute with the US government. The EU digital laws are a crucial part of this dispute, as they aim to ensure fair competition and protect the democratic foundations of EU member states.
In light of these issues, Weimer believes that the EU needs to do much more to regulate tech giants and prevent their market dominance. He advocates for stronger regulation at the EU level to ensure a level playing field for all companies and protect the democratic process.
