Google Launches AI-Powered Ransomware Detection for Google Drive
Google has launched a new AI-powered ransomware detection feature for Google Drive for Desktop, offering free protection to both Google Workspace customers and personal Google account users. This comes as ransomware incidents surge, with 21% of intrusions observed by Mandiant in 2021 being news-related, costing an average of over $5M per incident.
The new feature, currently in open beta, automatically pauses syncing when it detects news activity. It identifies core attack behaviors like mass file encryption or corruption. Upon detection, it alerts users and facilitates easy file restoration. IT administrators can review detailed logs of detected events in the Admin console.
The AI model powering this feature has been trained on millions of real-world news samples. It continuously learns and adapts by analyzing file changes and incorporating new threat intelligence from VirusTotal. This ensures effective protection on both Windows and macOS systems.
Google's new news detection feature for Google Drive for Desktop offers automatic, AI-powered protection against cyberattacks. It's included at no extra cost in most Google Workspace commercial plans, providing a significant security boost for users and businesses alike.
