Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's extraordinary universe are in for a treat! According to "Variety", Warner Bros. has officially announced the release date for "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" (Ger: "Die Jagd nach Gollum"). The film is set to drop on our screens on December 17, 2027, fittingly during the festive season, like its predecessors.

A Double Dose of Gollum!

Andy Serkis (61), the iconic performer behind the tormented Gollum, is not just returning to the big screen but also taking the director's chair. Serkis has been shaping Gollum's captivating character since "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" in 2002. With credits like "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" under his belt, excitement for this project is palpable.

Originally slated for a 2026 release, the production has seen a slight delay, with filming set to commence in the summer of 2024.

Echoes from the Past

The film's plot details have been trickling in. Philippa Boyens, who co-produced the original trilogy with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, hinted to "Empire" magazine that "The Hunt for Gollum" is a "gritty story" unfolding after Bilbo's birthday party but before the harrowing Mines of Moria events. As Boyens stated, "It's a particular piece of an untold, fascinating story, told from Gollum's unique perspective."

The trio of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens will also serve as producers on this project, assuring an authentic Middle-earth experience. Sources close to Warner Bros. have emphasized their active involvement throughout the production process.

Familiar Faces?

Rumor has it that fans might be joined by some familiar faces from the original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Stars like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have expressed interest in returning to Middle-earth if the story aligns. However, no official word on additional cast members has been given just yet.

With "The Hunt for Gollum," Warner Bros. continues the enduring Middle-earth saga. Both the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies raked in roughly 2.9 billion USD worldwide each. The latest theatrical appearance was the anime film "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim" in 2024, and "The Hunt for Gollum" marks the first live-action film in the "Lord of the Rings" series since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" in 2014.

Looking Ahead

Alongside "The Hunt for Gollum," Warner Bros. has also announced release dates for other intriguing productions. The next "Evil Dead" film starring Souheila Yacoub is scheduled for July 24, 2026, while M. Night Shyamalan's "Remain" featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters is set for October 23, 2026.
