"Upcoming cinematic release focusing on the character Gollum from 2027" - Gollum-centered movie unveiled, set for release in 2027.

Gear up, Middle-earth enthusiasts! Get ready for a thrilling ride as J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic universe returns with a brand new adventure. According to industrial insider, "Variety", the eagerly anticipated "Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" (Ger: "Die Jagd nach Gollum") is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, bringing some festive magic to the holiday season - just like its illustrious predecessors.

A Double Dose of Andy Serkis!

The charismatic Andy Serkis (61) returns to the scene, not only as the tortured creature Gollum, but also as the film's director. Known for his remarkable portrayal of the tormented character using motion-capture technology since "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" in 2002, Serkis boasts a diverse directorial résumé, including "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage". Initially planned for a 2026 release, the film's scheduled date has been pushed back by a year, with the film announced in 2024 taking its original slot.

A Timely Tale: Between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship"

Details regarding the film's gripping narrative have been unveiled. As revealed to "Empire" magazine by Philippa Boyens, part of the original trilogy production team with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, "The Hunt for Gollum" tells an "intense story" set "post-eleventy-first birthday party for Bilbo Baggins and pre-Mines of Moria journey by the Fellowship." Boyens teased, "It's a specific part of an unparalleled, untold narrative, interpreted from the unique perspective of this extraordinary creature."

The trio of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens will act as producers for this film, with Warner Bros. assuring their involvement in every crucial step of the productions process.

A Possible Return of the Old Guard

As fans eagerly await the adventures of Gollum, there's potential for some familiar faces to grace the silver screen once more. Actors like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have all indicated interest in reprising their roles whenever the story calls for it, though no official casting announcements have been made yet.

The forthcoming film continues Warner Bros.' successful journey through Middle-earth, with both the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies garnering approximately $2.9 billion worldwide each. The franchise's most recent cinematic appearance was the animated film "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim" in December 2024. "The Hunt for Gollum" will be the first live-action film in the "Lord of the Rings" pantheon since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" in 2014.

Other Exciting Releases on the Horizon

Besides the Gollum film, Warner Bros. has announced schedule dates for other exciting projects: The new "Evil Dead" film, led by Souheila Yacoub, is set for release on July 24, 2026, while "Remain", directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters, is slated for October 23, 2026.
