Golfers Lee Westwood and Justin Leonard experienced significant advances in the World Golf Rankings, leaping over 3,200 positions following impressive performances at The Open Championship.

In a thrilling conclusion to the 153rd Open Championship, Scottie Scheffler emerged victorious, moving three-quarters of the way towards the Career Grand Slam.

The American golfer, currently ranked World No.1, clinched the title with a dramatic final round at St Andrews, Scotland. His victory marks his second Major title, following his win at the Masters Tournament earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Lee Westwood, a British golfing legend, made history in his 28th Open appearance. Westwood made the cut and, after 36-holes, sat three-under for the event. Despite falling away at the weekend, Westwood finished in a tie for 34th, marking his best Open performance since 2010.

Westwood's consistent play earned him a significant boost in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). After qualifying for The Open Championship via Final Qualifying, Westwood's OWGR position jumped from a lowly 4689th to a respectable 930th.

Other notable improvements in the OWGR were seen among golfers who do not possess OWGR points from their respective tours, as they can only receive points from playing on the 24 eligible Golf Tours. Harris English, who finished second at The Open Championship, saw his OWGR position rise from 19th to a career-high 8th. Phil Mickelson, who went from 1252th to 924th, and Sergio Garcia, who moved from 467th to 370th, also experienced notable improvements.

Interestingly, Dustin Johnson, who plays on the LIV Golf League, jumped from 969th to 571st in the OWGR after The Open Championship. Johnson will be teeing it up at LIV Golf UK at the JCB Golf & Country Club on the 25th July.

Henrik Stenson, one of Westwood's Majesticks GC teammates, also saw a significant improvement, jumping 680 spots to 969th in the OWGR. Stenson will be playing at the Scottish Open, while English will be competing at The Senior Open.

Justin Leonard, the 1997 Claret Jug winner, finished The Open Championship in a share of 59th place. Leonard, who has a free pass into The Open Championship until the age of 60, will undoubtedly be hoping for another strong performance in the future.

No specific players from the 153rd Open Championship have been reported as qualified for the PGA Tour Champions yet. Final qualifying for the 153rd Open took place on July 1, 2025, at venues including Burnham & Berrow and Dundonald Links. The Senior Open will take place at Sunningdale in 2025, but the exact dates are yet to be announced.

As the dust settles on The 153rd Open Championship, golf fans are already looking forward to the upcoming events. With several top golfers continuing their competitive run, the golfing world is set for an exciting few weeks.
