Golfer Kim Si-woo's day at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational took a turn for the worse on the 11th hole, a par-3 with a 155-yard shot at the TPC Southwind in Memphis. In an unexpected series of events, Kim hit five consecutive balls into the water hazard on the right side of the green, resulting in a dismal score of 13 over the original par.
This was a record-breaking misfortune, as the last time a player scored 10 over on a par-3 hole during a regular PGA Tour event (not counting major championships) was back in 1983. Despite the catastrophic performance, Kim showed remarkable resilience and grit, delivering a birdie on the following hole and another on the 14th. However, the water proved to be a constant nuisance, as he fell victim to it once again, earning a double bogey on the 14th’s par-3.
Despite the struggle, Kim managed to maintain his passion for golf, rallying back with three birdies and a par to fight for a better standing. Regrettably, this wasn’t enough to help him avoid the bottom of the leaderboard on the day.
Feeling the heat of the competition, Kim faced Abraham Ancer, Sam Burns, and Hideki Matsuyama, who masterfully navigated the course and engaged in a thrilling three-way playoff. Ancer emerged the victor, claiming his first PGA Tour win and becoming the fourth Mexican-born player to achieve such a feat.

Enrichment: In an unprecedented feat during The Open Championship in 2024, Kim Si-woo recorded a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at Royal Troon. This impressive shot added another noteworthy accolade to his already impressive golf resume[1]. However, as astounding as this accomplishment is, it does not affect the record-breaking water hazard mishap on the 11th hole during the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
