Golf Updates: Tour Championship and British Masters Tournaments
The British Masters, a beloved event on the European Tour, returns to The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, England this week. The tournament, which was first designed by Tom Bendelow in 1907 and later upgraded by Donald Ross in 1913, has undergone a renovation by Rees Jones in the early '90s.
The course, par 72 and stretching 7,310 yards, is set to challenge the leading players. The Brabazon Course, designed by Dave Thomas and Peter Alliss, boasts two signature holes that have captured the attention of golf enthusiasts.
The drivable par 4 10th, measuring 319 yards/292 metres, is the first of these. The hole, known for its inviting tee shot, tests the courage of the players as they approach the green. The second signature hole is the par 3 15th, which requires a carry of over 200 yards across the lake.
The purse for the tournament stands at a impressive $40 million/€34.3 million, with $10 million/€8.55 million going to the winner. Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, is the leading player in the field, having already won five times on the PGA Tour this season. Scheffler is the betting favorite for the tournament, with odds of 13-8. Rory McIlroy is rated an 8-1 shot for the tournament.
The field for the tournament is limited to the leading 30 players on the FedEx Cup standings. Among them, Conor Purcell, the lone Irish player competing, is on a run of four straight cuts made and is looking to improve his standing on the Race to Dubai. Matt Wallace is aiming to bounce back from a disappointing finish in Denmark and catch Luke Donald's eye at The Belfry.
The British Masters will be live on Sky Sports from 12.30pm. In addition to the British Masters, the Tour Championship is taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, at East Lake Golf Club. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy are among the players in the field for the Tour Championship, with Tommy Fleetwood winning the tournament last year.
The British Masters has a rich history, hosting numerous tournaments through the years, making it a popular venue on the European Tour. This year's event is shaping up to be an exciting one, with Aaron Rai and Matt Fitzpatrick headlining the market, along with Rasmus Hojgaard, who could leapfrog Shane Lowry into sixth place in the standings and earn a spot on Luke Donald's Ryder Cup team if he finishes no worse than tied-29th (with one other).
