Golf Tournament Lead: Camilo Villegas, Dubbed 'Spider-Man', Revives Past Form to Share Early Lead at Players Championship

Spider-Man's spirit is alive and swinging at The Players Championship, as Colombian golfer Camilo Villegas, affectionately known as "El Hombre Araña," stunned the crowd with a surprise share of the early lead. This web-slinging superhero of the greens rolled back the years with an impressive opening six-under 66, defying his low world ranking of 254.

Heading into the 51st edition of the PGA Tour's flagship event in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the 43-year-old proved he's still got what it takes to compete with the best. Joining Villegas atop the first-round leaderboard are American golfers Lucas Glover and J.J. Spaun.

Flashback to almost two decades ago when, little under 19 years ago, a tied-third finish at The Players Championship had marked Villegas as a prodigious talent. At that time, he was just a young college graduate with nothing to lose.

Villegas' career saw highs and lows; he peaked at world No. 7 with four victories on the circuit, including both the BMW Championship and Tour Championship in September 2008. Amid a barren run that left the Medellin-born golfer seriously considering quitting the sport, he faced one of life's toughest challenges – the loss of his daughter, Mia, in 2020. The golf community stood by him, rallying around during this heart-wrenching time. Villegas found motivation in his tragic loss, using his daughter's memory as fuel to power him back up the world rankings.

After a nine-year wait, Villegas ended his PGA Tour drought with an emotional victory at the Bermuda Championship in November 2023. Despite a lackluster performance since that win, he managed a tied-seventh finish at The American Express in January, hinting at a return to form. Now, he's flying high in Ponte Vedra Beach, starting strong with three consecutive early birdies.

Villegas, aware of the course's tricky nature, advised, "You've got to keep it in play. Aggressive and reckless can bring big numbers quick – you've got to avoid those."

Not only is Villegas battling his way back to the top, but he's also fought off an issue known as the yips – an involuntary muscle tension in the wrist. If that wasn't enough, 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover is also chasing a seventh PGA Tour victory and a first since 2023. Glover, aged 45, is determined to prove that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Glover experienced a promising beginning.

World No. 57 Spaun carded an impressive bogey-free round, strengthening his hunt for a second PGA Tour win and keeping pace with the leaders. Meanwhile, two-time Players champion Rory McIlroy sat just behind the leaders, attempting to defend his title and chase an unprecedented third consecutive win at TPC Sawgrass.

As the tournament unfolds, it's clear that every golfer is bringing their A-game to The Players Championship. Don't forget to catch Camilo Villegas' second round at 8:35 a.m. ET (12:35 p.m. GMT) Friday, with J.J. Spaun and Lucas Glover teeing off at 8:02 a.m. ET (12:02 p.m. GMT) and 1:40 p.m. ET (5:40 p.m. GMT) respectively. Buckle up for an action-packed tournament!

Pursuing a historic three-peat at The Players, Scheffler aims high.
  1. Villegas, drawing inspiration from his superhero alias "El Hombre Araña" (Spider-Man), is striving to reclaim his form in golf, just like a superhero returning to the scene after a hiatus.
  2. Interestingly, almost two decades ago, golf's very own Spiderman, Villegas, shared the third spot at The Players Championship, mirroring a young hero's rise in a different world.
  3. Amidst the competition at The Players Championship, two titans of the sport stand out: Camilo Villegas, the Colombian golfer colloquially known as Spiderman, and Lucas Glover, a former US Open champion who resembles a seasoned superhero battling for a seventh PGA Tour victory.
