Golf Season Deciders: FedEx Cup and LIV Team Championship to Determine This Year's Champions

The LIV Golf Team Championship and the PGA Tour's Tour Championship Set to Thrill Golf Fans

Golf enthusiasts are in for a treat this August as two major tournaments take centre stage. The LIV Golf Team Championship and the PGA Tour's Tour Championship promise to deliver nail-biting action and excitement.

The LIV Golf Team Championship, scheduled for August 22-24 at The Cardinal at St John's in Michigan, features a unique three-day format. Twelve teams of four players each will compete daily, with no byes. The event kicks off with a play-in match on Wednesday between the two lowest seeds in a single-elimination, best-of-three points format.

The main event begins on Friday with quarter-finals, where teams play match play matches consisting of two singles and one foursomes (alternate-shot) match. The higher seed selects the matchups. On Saturday, the six quarter-final winners compete for three final slots in the semi-finals. The final day, Sunday, sees the last three teams compete in stroke play, with all players' scores counting towards the team total.

Notable players participating in the LIV Golf Team Championship include Jon Rahm (top seed, Legion XIII), Joaquin Niemann (leader of Torque GC with 5 individual wins this season), Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Richard Bland, Talor Gooch, Matt Jones, Kevin Na, and Sebastian Munoz, who recently recorded a historic 59. Rahm won the individual LIV season championship for the second year in a row and makes his team championship debut this year after missing last year’s event due to illness.

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour's Tour Championship, happening concurrently at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, has a different format. Players qualify based on the FedEx Cup points standings accumulated over the season. The top 30 players compete in a four-round stroke-play event with starting strokes allocated based on FedEx Cup rankings to determine the season champion.

As of now, the exact 2025 player list for the PGA Tour Championship is not available. However, notable participants usually include leading players on the PGA Tour like Scottie Scheffler, who leads the FedEx Cup with 7,456 points, and Jon Rahm, who competes on both tours now.

In addition to these major tournaments, the Ladies European Tour's Hills Open is being held at Hills Golf & Sports Club, Gothenburg, Sweden, from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 August, 2024, with a purse of €300,000. The LPGA's CPKC Women's Open is being held at Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 August, 2025, with a purse of $2.6 million.

The DP World Tour's Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo is being held at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, Sutton Coldfield, England, from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 August, 2025, with a purse of $3.5 million. The HotelPlanner Tour's The Dutch Futures is being held at The Dutch, Spijk, Netherlands, from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 August, 2025, with a purse of €300,000.

The 2024 LIV Golf Team Championship is being defended by Rippers GC. The DP World Tour event is taking place before the LIV Golf Team Championship at The Cardinal at St John's in Michigan. The top six European players for Luke Donald's Team Europe for the Ryder Cup will be announced on Sunday night.
