Golf pro Phil Mickelson reveals plans for his golf career ahead
Phil Mickelson, at 54, finds himself at a critical juncture in his golfing career. The LIV Golf star is eyeing the upcoming US Open as potentially his last chance to complete a career Grand Slam and join the ranks of golf's titans.
Mickelson boasts an impressive resume, with six major championship wins to his name—three Masters titles, two PGA Championships, and one Open Championship. However, the US Open has been an elusive prize, with six runner-up finishes, including a tie for second in 2013, and fourmissed cuts in the past five years.
Should he triumph at Oakmont, Mickelson would join an exclusive club of seven players: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy, who recently clinched a career Grand Slam with his Masters win.
Aging isn't on his side, and Mickelson acknowledges that this could well be his final opportunity. "There's a high likelihood that this will be my swansong," he says, but he adds, "I haven't really pondered it much."
Currently ranked No 1,162 in the world, Mickelson's spot in the US Open is secure thanks to his PGA Championship win in 2021. After 2026, he would need to qualify, joining the thousands of hopefuls who enter the grueling qualification process, culminating in the "longest day in golf," where competitors battle it out over 36 holes for the remaining spots.
When asked about his willingness to participate in qualifiers, Mickelson responded cautiously, "I don't know. I haven't weighed that option yet."
As for LIV Golfers qualifying for the US Open post-2026, the specifics remain unclear. However, for 2025, the USGA announced a new qualification method for LIV Golfers—the leading player in LIV Golf's individual standings at the end of 2025, as well as the leading player on May 18, 2026, will qualify directly.
So, will Mickelson write a fresh chapter in golf history at Oakmont? Time will tell.

Golf remains a significant part of Mickelson's life, as he prepares to compete in other sports like golf, striving to qualify for future US Opens should he not secure a spot through his past victories. Despite his current struggles, Mickelson maintains a glimmer of hope, aiming to join the golfing titans who have achieved a career Grand Slam and add his name to the list, which currently includes names like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
