Tearing Up the Golf Course: DeChambeau's Brute Force Approach
Bryson DeChambeau, nicknamed "The Scientist," totally revolutionized the golfing world in 2020 during the Rocket Classic. While the global pandemic had everyone stuck indoors, DeChambeau made use of his time by pumping iron, seeking an edge in his game.
Amassing four wins in 2018, including the Memorial and Dell Technologies Championship, DeChambeau had already established a strong professional career. However, he struggled to make a mark in major championships, failing to achieve a top ten finish in his initial 14 attempts.

When restrictions lifted and the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020, DeChambeau produced immediate results, finishing T3 in his comeback tournament. Top tens followed at the RBC Heritage and Travelers Championship before he stormed onto the Detroit Golf Club for the Rocket Classic.
With an opening 66, a consistent series of 67s, and a final round 65, DeChambeau destroyed the competition, finishing three strokes ahead of Matthew Wolff to prove that his newfound power was worth the personal sacrifice.
"It's a little emotional for me," said DeChambeau, who was 26 at the time. "Because I did do something a little different, I changed my body, I changed my mindset in the game, and was able to accomplish a win while playing a completely different style of golf."
DeChambeau showcased his new approach at the 2020 US Open, where his strategy of huge drives, gouged wedges, and precise putting left the competition in the dust, resulting in a six-shot victory over Wolff once more. DeChambeau was the only player to break par that week, and he closed out the tournament with a Sunday 67, finishing six-under.
Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, only a handful of spectators could witness his extraordinary victories. As golf fans could only watch in awe on TV, DeChambeau became the talk of the media and inspired other players, including Rory McIlroy, to put on muscle in pursuit of driver speed and power out of the rough.
DeChambeau, now just as famous on social media as he is on the course, has since scaled back his bulk but holds onto the belief in his newfound ability as one of the best in the world. He proved that belief in the 2021 US Open, where he went head-to-head with McIlroy and emerged victorious on the final hole at Pinehurst.
