Golden State Secures Crucial Victory in WNBA, With Hayes and Zandalasini Taking the Lead Against Connecticut
Golden State Valkyries Secure Second Straight Win, Move into Seventh Place
The Golden State Valkyries continued their push for a playoff spot with a 74-57 victory over the struggling Connecticut Sun on August 19, 2025. Tiffany Hayes and Cecilia Zandalasini led the way for the Valkyries, scoring 17 points each, while Janelle Salaun added 16 points, including 11 in the second half.
The Valkyries, who are an expansion franchise in their inaugural season, have exceeded expectations by competing strongly for a playoff spot. They currently hold a 7th place standing in the WNBA with a record of 18 wins and 16 losses. The team's recent four-game winning streak was snapped by the Atlanta Dream, but they have since bounced back with two consecutive victories, moving a half-game ahead of the Seattle Storm and a full game in front of the Los Angeles Sparks.
Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun have now lost five straight games and own the league's worst record at 5-26. The Sun trailed 32-26 at halftime and never led in the game. Despite a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, the Sun were unable to overcome the Valkyries, who went on a 14-2 spurt to secure the win.
Aneesah Morrow scored 13 points and had 14 rebounds for the Sun in their loss. Veronica Burton provided 10 assists for the Valkyries. The Golden State Valkyries made four 3-pointers during a 14-3 run in the third quarter and four more during a 14-2 spurt in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
As the WNBA season enters its final stages, the top eight teams in the standings will qualify for the post-season. The Valkyries, who are currently just behind the Indiana Fever, who are 6th with a 19-16 record, will look to solidify their playoff positioning in the coming weeks.
The triumphant Golden State Valkyries, triumphing in basketball once more, are further bolstering their WNBA standing with a 74-57 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Tiffany Hayes, Cecilia Zandalasini, and Janelle Salaun significantly contributed, leaving the Sun struggling in seventh place, owing to their poor record of 5-26.
