Golden Knight hockey team begins pre-season practice with ambition of winning the Stanley Cup, featuring the presence of Mitch Marner on the ice.
The Vegas Golden Knights have made a significant move in the NHL off-season, acquiring one of the league's best playmakers, Mitch Marner, in a sign-and-trade deal. Marner, who previously played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with Vegas.
Marner finished fifth in the league last season with 102 points and third with 75 assists, setting a career high of 27 goals. His arrival in Las Vegas follows his expressed desire to start over with a new fan base, after facing criticism from Maple Leafs fans.
Meanwhile, Mitch Eichel, another top talent, was unavailable to the media on Thursday due to a minor injury. Eichel's contract negotiations with the Golden Knights remain a priority, and he has expressed a willingness to continue negotiations if nothing gets done before the season begins.
The Golden Knights' roster has been bolstered with the addition of Marner, joining Jack Eichel, who produced similar numbers last season, finishing with 28 goals, 66 assists, and 94 points. Noah Hanifin, another top pick from the 2015 draft, completes the trio of high-calibre players now on the Golden Knights' roster.
The Golden Knights are among the favourites to win the Stanley Cup this season, even without Marner's acquisition. The two-time defending champion Florida is the 6-1 favourite at BetMGM Sportsbook, with Vegas and Colorado tied at 8-1 each.
Alex Pietrangelo, a key figure for the Golden Knights for both his leadership abilities and on-ice performance, has been sidelined due to an injury. Despite this, Pietrangelo plans on living in Las Vegas and staying involved with the Golden Knights, even after a major hip injury. He has been frequently seen around the Golden Knights' facility.
